The Studio

One bench, one pair of hands, no factory and never mass produced. Signed, dated and branded as one of a kind.

Hutch Custom is the Cape Town studio of furniture designer Warren Turnbull. In a world that makes everything faster, cheaper and in its thousands, Hutch moves the other way - slowly, deliberately, and entirely by hand. Every piece of custom furniture is drawn, joined and finished at a single bench, then signed and numbered as a one-off that will never be made again.

Turnbull

Multi-Award-Winning Designer & Carpenter - the sole hand of Hutch Custom.

Warren Turnbull is the multi-award-winning designer and carpenter behind Hutch Custom - a Cape Town studio producing one-of-a-kind fine furniture entirely by hand. He designs and builds every piece himself, in solid timber and traditional joinery: signed, dated and numbered, made to be passed down.

He doesn't design pieces for others to build, and he doesn't build pieces others have designed - both happen at the same bench, by the same hands. He films each build in full, from the first rough board to the final hand-rubbed finish, and accepts only a select number of commissions each year.

"When someone owns a piece from my studio, they own the hours, the decisions and the mistakes that were corrected. That's what makes a Hutch piece irreplacable."

The Koto

A sustained musical note, shaped in wood.

A single continuous curve gives the piece a quiet sense of movement - like a sustained musical note shaped in wood. Both sculpture and instrument, it is a study in the harmony between craftsmanship, material and music - and the standout piece of Warren's Decorex year.

Almari Cabinet

An intimate ritual, raised on slender legs.

A standing bar cabinet in figured walnut - fluted drawer fronts, hand-turned pulls, and a glass cradle that floats above tapered legs. Designed to be the most considered object in the room.

Kaasir Console

Light, drawn through a curtain of oak.

A low, softened console wrapped in hand-spaced oak slats that let warm light bleed through from within. Rounded ends and fine tapered legs keep a heavy form feeling weightless.

Tsururu Bedside Tables

A quiet frame around a floating shelf.

An exposed-joinery oak frame cradles a soft-cornered cabinet that appears to float within it. Built as a pair or singly, the Tsururu brings a calm, architectural rhythm to the bedside - every leg and rail joined by hand.

Kaareeva Coffee Table

A low plane, balanced on splayed legs.

A generous oak top with softly eased edges rests on hand-shaped, splayed legs and a sculpted stretcher. Light enough to feel airy, grounded enough to anchor a room - a quiet centrepiece built to be lived around.
